“The rain pattered dismally against the panes”.

A

The sound of the rain is often perceived as calming, which contradicts with Victor’s “anxiety that almost amounted to agony.” However, this use of juxtaposition could represent the calm before the storm. By softening the atmosphere, Shelley intensifies the terror and horror Victor feels when he animates the monster. The use of the adverb “dismally” as well as the adjective “dreary” also helps to foreshadow Victor’s disappointment with the creature. Moreover, rainy weather often signifies sadness and misery, and the adverb “dismally” reinforces this as it means that the rain pattered in a depressing manner. Therefore, Shelley skilfully uses another example of pathetic fallacy to reflect Victor’s emotions which play an important role in foreshadowing the horror and disgust he feels towards his creation.

Moreover, because Victor is creating something unnatural, he is becoming oblivious to the natural world around him. In other words, he is separating himself from reality. In addition, Shelley uses lightning to foreshadow upcoming events. For instance, Victor expresses, “…vivid flashes of lightning dazzled my eyes, illuminating the lake, making it appear like a vast sheet of fire. This quote foreshadows the presence of the monster as evil and dark. Mary Shelley uses this technique to demonstrate foreshadowing, to emphasize emotions, biblical references, and more.
