D-503 quote analysis Flashcards
I don’t want √−1! Take it out of me, this √−1
Context: As a child, D-503 is terrified by the concept of √-1, an imaginary number that contradicts his belief in a completely rational world governed by mathematics. This fear of the irrational, which he feels could exist within himself, persists into adulthood. When he falls in love with I-330 and acts irrationally, he views these actions as if done by someone else, showing his struggle to accept the irrational aspects of his personality.
symbolism: The use of √−1 as a symbol for the irrational or the aspects of human nature that cannot be quantified or controlled is a powerful literary device. It represents the conflict between individuality and conformity, emotion and logic, and the natural versus the constructed societal order.
