Sets Relations And Functions Flashcards
What can SET THEORY be used for?
Test the efficiency of data structures. There is a difference between sets for distinction and sets for counting.
What do sets relations and functions deal with in mathematics?
Discrete objects. Discrete objects are those objects that are separated from each other. Not connected to or distinct from each other.
What is an item within a set called?
An element.
What is used to denote sets and what is used to denote elements of a set?
Capitol letters denote sets, lower case letters denote elements of a set.
What is a universal set?
A large fixed set in which the members of all sets under investigation belong.
What is a function?
A special form of a broader concept about sets called relations. Function indicates the dependence of one varying quantity on another.
What is a subset?
A set in which every element of one set belongs to another set.
What is an empty set?
A set in which no elements of the universal set meet the requirements of Property P.
What is a proper set?
A set in which every element of one set belongs to another. But at least one element from the other set does not belong to the first set.
