What are a set designers objectives?
- Help set the tone and style of the production.
- Establish the locale and period in which the play takes place.
- Develop a design concept consistent with the director’s concept.
- Provide a central image or metaphor, where appropriate.
- Ensure that scenery is coordinated with other production elements.
- Solve practical design problems.
What are the elements of theatre design?
line, color, mass, composition, texture
What is line?
the outline or silhouette of elements onstage
What is color?
the shadings and contrasts of color combinations
What is mass?
the overall bulk or weight of scenic elements; for example, a series of high, heavy platforms or fortress walls versus a bare stage or a stage with only a single tree on it
What is composition?
the balance and arrangement of elements; the way elements are arranged
What is texture?
the “feel” projected by surfaces and fabrics
What is the set designer’s process?
- read script and map out required spaces
- research time period
- rough sketches
- meet with director to discuss preliminary outlines
- develop styles, needs of performers, and visual concepts with director
- develop thumbnail sketches (preliminary sketches)
- meet with director with sketches multiple times til they agree
- make a more complete design rendering
- make small 3d rendering
What are the tools of set design?
ground plans, renderings, models, flats

Computer Assisted Design
