Abstract
Not realistic or life-like, but instead using colours, shapes, textures, sounds and other means to achieve an effect.
Apron
The area of the stage nearest the audience, which projects in front of the curtain.
Backdrop
A large painted cloth hung as part of the scenery.
Box set
A set which has three complete walls, often used in naturalistic set designs.
Drape
Curtains or other hanging fabrics.
Flats
A piece of scenery mounted on a frame.
Fly
Raising and lowering scenery onto the stage using a series of ropes and pulleys.
Ground plan
This is a bird’s eye view of the set showing the scale of the set.
Naturalistic
Life-like, realistic.
Props
Small items that actors can carry onstage.
Revolve
A large turntable device that can be turned to reveal a different setting.
Set dressing
Items on the set that are not used as props, but create detail and interest. For example framed paintings.
Sight lines
The line of where the audience can and can’t see.
Trucks
A platform on wheels upon which scenery can be mounted and moved.
