Blackout
Suddenly switching all the lights off.
Cross fade
Fading lights out on one area of the stage while simultaneously bringing them up on another.
Cues
Instructions indicating when a change in lighting or sound could occur.
Effects
Special lighting such as strobes or using lighting to recreate headlights, lightening, fires or other unusual lighting.
Amplification
In lighting, changing intensity or in sound, changing the volume.
Gels
Sheets of plastic used to change the colour of the stage light.
Footlights
Lights placed at the front of the stage at the actors feet.
Fresnel
A stage lantern which creates a soft edge beam of light. They are used to create a ‘wash’.
Gobos
Metal cut-outs attached to lanterns that are used to project patterns such as leaves or logos.
House lights
Lighting that makes the audience visible.
Lighting rig
The structure that holds the lanterns in the theatre.
Snap
Quickly on or off.
Profile
A lantern projecting a narrow intense beam of light.
Fades
How sound is made louder.
Reverb
An echoing effect.
