Description
Control
Prediction
The anticipated outcome of a presently unknown or future measurement.
Description
Systematic observations that can be quantified & classified.
Control
Functional relation; the highest level of scientific understanding.
5 Philosophical Assumptions of Science
Determinism Empiricism Pragmatism Parsimony Selectionism
Determinism
The universe is a lawful and orderly place; all phenomenon occur as a result of other events.
Empiricism
Objective observation of phenomenon of interest. Must be a thorough description, systematic & repeated measure, and precise quantification.
Pragmitism
Inductive reasoning based on practical rather than theoretical considerations.
Parsimony
The most simple and logical explanations of the phenomenon under investigation must be ruled out experimentally before more complex explanations are considered.
Selectionism
The transfer of behaviors from one member to another in a group of individuals.
Can be phylogenic, ontogenic, or cultural.
