What is mindfulness?
paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non judgementally
What are the statistics of depression relapsing?
50% will have at least one further episode.
Those who have had more than 2 episodes will have a 70-80% likelihood of further recurrence
What do people with a low mood do:
either focus on self (ruminative response style)
or do things that take mind away from self
Ruminators prolong low mood AND have produced problem solving ability.
How does mindfulness help treat depression?
to help people who have suffered from depression in the past to learn skills to prevent relapse
To become more aware of bodily sensation, feelings and thoughts moment to moment
