What is Reward Power/AP?

A

Based on one’s perception that the other has the ability to mediate rewards for him
A person who can give “gifts” (bonuses, promotions, etc) is seen as having power because they are able to exercise a kind of power that is desired by most who work for them

What is Coercive Power?

A

Based on one’s perception that the other has the ability to mediate punishments
on him
Essentially a person who uses threats to assert control/force

A

Based on one’s perception that the other has a legitimate right to prescribe behaviour for him
This would be the kind of power that is earned by a manager by way of demonstrating their strengths, interpersonal skills, etc

Power gained as a consequence of being more knowledgable in a subject than others (doctors, scientists, etc.)
