Session 8 Flashcards
4 paired intrinsic muscles of the tongue?
Motor Innervation?
Genioglossus-hypoglossal
Hypoglossus-hypoglossal
Styloglossus-hypoglossal
Palatoglossus-Vagus
What does sensation in the anterior 2/3 or the tongue?
Taste in ant 2/3?
Post 1/3 sensation and taste?
Trigeminal V3 (lingual)
Chorda tympani branch of fascial nerve
Glossopharyngeal
What is sialolithiasis?
Symptoms?
Salivary gland stones usually in submandibular From dehydration.
Pain, swelling, infection
What is tonsillitis?
Symptoms?
Inflammation of palatine tonsils.
Sore throat, difficulty swallowing, cervical lymph nodes, usually viral or strep pyogenes
Symptoms of peritonsillar abscess? And causes?
Borders of nasopharynx?
What it contains?
Fever, bad breath, drooling, from untreated tonsillitis, or bacterial
Soft palate superior, post is C1/2, anterior is nasal cavity
Pharyngeal tonsil (adenoid)
Problem with enlarged adenoid?
Boundaries of oropharynx?
Contains?
Block Eustachian tube causing persistent ear infections, snoring, chronic sinusitis.
Inf-soft palate to epiglottis, ant oral cavity, post C2/3
Palatine tonsils
Boundaries of laryngopharynx?
Contains?
Oropharynx and oesophagus, ant is larynx and post is C4/5/6.
Pisiform fossa.
What muscles elevate the pharynx and larynx during swallowing?
Notes on them
3longditudinal muscles:
Salpingospharyngeus, cartilage part of ET, pharyngeal branch of vagus as merges with palatopharyngeus.
Palatopharyngeus, hard palate, post border of thyroid cartilage, also pharyngeal branch of vagus.
Stylopharyngeus, Attaches to styloid process and is the posterior border or thyroid cartilage. Innervated by glossopharyngeal nerve.
Describe the pharyngeal constrictors
3 circular muscles that constrict walls of pharynx when swallowing all innervated by Vagus nerve:
Superior pharyngeal constrictor
Middle pharyngeal constrictor
Inferior pharyngeal constrictor
What is a pharyngeal pouch?
Presentation?
Causes?
A posteromedial diverticulum arising in weakness of two parts of inferior constrictor (Killians dehiscence).
Bad breath,food regurgitation,difficulty swallowing
Failure of Upper oesophageal sphincter to contract, weakness in inferior constrictor muscle. Abnormal swallowing in pressure increasing pressure in laryngopharynx.
Sensory innervation nasopharynx?
Oropharynx?
Laryngopharynx?
Maxillary nerve CN V2
CNIX
CNX
Phases of swallowing?
Phase 1-oral voluntary
Phase 2-involuntary, suprahyoid and longditudinal shorten to widen and shorten the pharynx. Epiglottis closes over larynx.
Phase 3-involuntary,
Signs and symptoms of dysphagia?
Cause?
Coughing/choking
Sialorrhea
Change in voice
Cranial nerve problems IX/X from jugular foramen issues or medullary infarct.
Signs in IX X cranial problems?
XII?
Absent gag, uvula deviated away from lesion, taste impairment of posterior tongue.
Wasted tongue, tongue may deviate when out to side of lesion.
