Session 7 Flashcards
Describe the process of cleaning
To remove any surface dirt and debris by vacuuming or scrubbing and washing with soapy water
Describe the process of disinfecting
A process that eliminates many or all pathogenic microorganisms
Describe the process of sterilisation
A process that destroys or eliminates all forms of microbial life and is carried out in healthcare facilities by physical or chemical methods
What are the 4 methods of cleaning
Dusting, washing, scrubbing, and damp wiping
How do you deal with cleaning linen in healthcare
All non infectious linen is placed in white bags to be washed.
Infectious linen is place din red bags to stop contamination, this also highlights its need to be washed at a higher temperature
What does cleaning do to microorganisms
Cleaning is physically reducing the presence of microorganisms by removing visible material, this doesn’t mean that all the germs are gone which is why disinfecting and sterilising is also important
What area does a red mop head clean as per the national colour coding scheme
Bathrooms, showers, toilets, basins and bathroom floors
What area does a blue mop head clean as per the national colour coding scheme
General areas, including offices, lounges, corridors and bedrooms
What area does a green mop head clean as per the national colour coding scheme
Kitchen areas including satellite kitchen area and food storage areas
What area does a yellow mop head clean as per the national colour coding scheme
Bedrooms when someone has an infection and is cared for in an isolated room
Why should you disinfect
It’s good to use when someone is sick to make sure any bacteria left on surfaces does not spread so they do not become harmful
When should you not use disinfectant
Disinfectant does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces and does not always remove all germs, it should not bee used on the skin
What does sterilisation do
Destroys all microorganisms to prevent disease transmission associated with the use of that item
What is the difference between steam sterilisation and chemical sterilisation
Chemical sterilisation is used for devices that would be sensitive to the high heat used in steam sterilisation, steam sterilisation was originally used to sterilise items that were moisture sensitive but today its used for items such as powders glass and electronics
