Substance abuse is the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs that can lead to dependence syndrome that develops after repeated substance use

Describe the mechanism of dependence (physical and psychological) - outline the 3 theories of dependence

A
  1. Learning theories
    - Classical conditioning model, learned associations between positive and negative reinforcers - so drug dependence arises from environmental effects paired with a drug effect
  2. Imitation theories
    - Social learning theory, learning through observation.
    Modelling, expectation and self-efficacy
  3. Rational choice theories
    - Dependency involves making rational choices that favours the benefits over the costs
