Session 3 ILO's - Tissues, organs, systems and epithelial tissue Flashcards
Define ‘tissue’
A collection of cells that are adapted to perform a specific function.
Define ‘organ’
Two or more tissues combined to create a structural unit that has a
particular function that are a sum of its parts.
Describe how cells are held together at the molecular level
Cell are held at the lateral surface to other cells and to the basal lamina
1. Cell-cell adhesion molecules
2. Extracellular matrix proteins (fibres) e.g. collagen fibres
3. Internal scaffolding
4. Close proximity (pressure effects holding layers together)
describe the structural relationships between the epithelia and closely associated tissues - glands, underlying connective tissue (lamina propria and muscularis mucosae)
In the gastrointestinal, urinary, and respiratory mucosae
discuss, for the gastrointestinal, urinary, and respiratory mucosae, how the structure of their constituent tissues is related to the function of the mucosa
