What is Cultural Identity?
Identity or feeling of belonging to a group. It is part of a person’s self conception + perception.
Name some factors which can shape someone’s cultural identity
Nationality, Ethnicity, Religion, Social Class, Generation, Locality, or any kind of social group that has its own distinct culture
Give some ways in which culture may affect presentation of health problems.
- different cultures view mental health differently
- different cultures perceive symptoms and actions differently

What specific issues do young people have relating to culture?

Define Heterosexism
Discrimination or prejudice against homosexuals on the assumption that heterosexuality is the normal sexual orientation
Give some examples of heterosexism.
- assuming a patient has an opposite sex partner
- assuming a married man doesn’t have anal sex
- assuming a butch looking women doesn’t need contraception
Define Gender Identity
Someone’s internal perception and experience of their gender
Define Gender Expression
The way a person lives in society and interacts with others
Define Sexual Orientation
Term used to describe what gender you are attracted to
not necessarily permanent
Define Transgender
Umbrella term for those whose gender identity +/or gender expression differs from their birth sex
Define Transsexual
A person who feels a consistent + overwhelming desire to transition + fulfil their life as a member of the opposite sex
