Session 2 - female anatomy Flashcards
why might you get a sharp pain at ovulation
Mittelschmerz is also referred to as painful ovulation
During ovulation, the egg and the fluid, as well as some blood, are released from the ovary into the peritoneal cavity- the fluid or blood may irritate the lining of the abdominal cavity, causing pain
pain may also be caused as the ovary has to rupture the peritoneal layer to leave the ovary
why do nuns tend to get ovarian cancer
Nuns are celibate, don’t get pregnant,
receive huge amount of trauma to peritoneum lining - increases risk of cancer
what is an ovarian cysts
Fluid filled lesions/sacs, can be benign or cancerous located in the ovary
how might a patient with an ovarian cyst present
Pain due to stretching of peritoneum, pain when ovary rupture, torsion of ovarian
cyst (compartment syndrome of ovary). Present with bloating
how does the uterus expand as the cervix grows
and how does this explain the symptoms of pregnancy
Uterus has grown up to the ziphoid process of the sternum
Other organs shifted out of the way by uterus
Pregnancy can cause acid reflux as pushing on stomach
Hormones can also affect it by causing relaxation of the connective tissue that make the lower oesophageal sphincter rigid
Constipation as large intestines are compressed
Pushing on bladder so need to pee a lot
Extreme stretch of ligaments
holding uterus in place can cause pain and discomfort
what are the round ligament and ligament of the ovary remnants of
the gubernaculum
what is the name of the pouch between the bladder and the uterus
Visicouterine pouch between bladder and uterus
what is the name of the pouch between the uterus and the rectum
Rectouterine pouch between rectum and uterus
what happens after and egg is released from the ovary
Egg ruptures out of ovary, goes through peritoneum lining and is caught by fimbrae, it is guided by a specialised fimbrae which has a groove in it
what connects the lateral pelvic wall and the uterus
The mesometrium of broad ligament connects the lateral pelvic wall and uterus
what is the messentry of the follopian tubes
The mesosalpinx of broad ligament is the messentry of the follopian tubes
what is the name of the double fold of peritoneum that the ovary is suspended in
Mesovarium of broad ligament - double fold of peritoneum that the ovary is suspended in
what is the main blood supply to the female reproductive tract
uterine artery
what is the relation of the uterine artery to the uerter
the ureter passes underneath the uterine artery- the uterine and ovarian arteries anastamose so need to be careful to clip of vessels during a hysterectomy
what is the normal positioning of the uterus and vagina
Normally uterus is antiverted and antiflexed so uterus sits on top of bladder, this is maintained by the broad ligaments that hold the uterus anteriorly in pelvis If you've had a few babies, the ligaments are stretched and the uterus can move
