diabetes mellitus
A disease resulting in high levels of blood glucose (hyperglycemia). It’s caused by insufficient insulin production or lack or responsiveness to insulin.
electrolytes
Mineral salts (sodium, potassium, calcium) found in the blood and tissues. A proper balance of electrolytes is essential to the normal functioning of the body.
goiter
Enlargement of the thyroid gland. Goiter is one of the earliest and most visible signs of iodine deficiency.
homeostasis
A state of constancy or equilibrium in the body’s internal environment.
hormone
A chemical substance produced by an endocrine gland.
insulin
A hormone produced by the pancreas; it lowers blood sugar.
metabolism
The sum of all the physical and chemical changes occurring in the body.
glucagon
A hormone produced by the pancreas; it increases blood sugar.
