Session 1-nutrition Basics And Homeostasis Flashcards
What is anabolism?
Uses energy, reducing power and raw materials to make molecules for growth and maintenance
What are the three components of energy expenditure?
Energy for Bmr, voluntary physical exercise and to process food
Why are fats essential to the diet?
Absorb fat soluble vitamins (ADEK)
Why is protein essential to the diet?
Amino acids (product of protein digestion) used in synthesis of essential N2 containing compounds
What happens if you lack minerals and vitamins?
They are water or lipid soluble. Deficiency diseases associated with absence/excess of these
Explain marasmus
Protein energy malnutrition
Common under age of 5 with child looking emaciated with muscle wastage and loss of body fat
Hair is thin and dry, diarrhoea and anaemia present
What is oedema?
Excess of watery fluid collecting in the cavities or tissues of the body
What is kwashiorkor?
Some carbs but very low protein diet
Lethargic and anorexic
Large abdomen due to hepatomegaly (abnormal enlargement of liver) and/or ascites (accumulate fluid in peritoneal cavity)
There is oedema due to low SERUM ALBUMIN (osmotic pressure) and anaemia
What is catabolism?
Break down molecules to release energy and reducing power
Name the 9 essential amino acids
If learned, this huge list may prove truly valuable
Isoleucine,leucine,threonine,histidine,lysine,methionine,phenylalanine,tryptophan,valine
