Session 1 - Intro to GI Flashcards
What are the 3 main processes of the GI tract. Briefly describe each process
1) Digestion:
a. Food must be converted to a sterile, pH neutral (or it will damage cells), and isotonic substance (needs to be isotonic with our body fluids otherwise it will impact the ECF.
b. Small sugars, AAs, lipids and other small molecules
2) Absorption:
a. Active and passive uptake of nutrient molecules, water and electrolytes
3) Excretion:
a. Food residues, gut debris, liver excrements
Name the 9 divisons of the abdomen
What happens in chronic acid exposure to the oesophagus?
Chronic acid exposure leads to barrett’s oesophagus, resulting in metaplasia of the lower oesophageal squamous epithelium to gastric columnar epithelium.
