Services and Systems Flashcards
Provisioning services
Things we consume or utilize. Ex) Water, crops, lumber
cultural services
Things that inspire, teach or entertain. Ex) Birdwatching, fishing, stargazing
Regulating services
Pollination, erosion control, water purification, air quality, carbon sequestration and climate control
Supporting Services
Seed dispersal, nutrient cycling, primary production
Stocks
the accumulation or storages of things. Have a flow in and flow out, which has rate in and rate out.
system archetypes/behaviors
similar patterns of behavior. Ex) tragedy of commons & limits to growth
flow
movement if things in and out of stocks
rate
speed at which things flow in and out of stocks
residence time
time something spends in any particular stock
Feedback
close the route between stock, rate and flow which creates dynamic behavior of that stock.
Types of feedback loops
(R)einforcing: accelerate the size of the stock; positive
(B)alancing: stabilize systems and drive that system to a certain “stable” state or target; negative
limits to growth
something inside or outside the system limits the growth of the condition. Will be S-shaped if the limiting condition is something constant such as available habitat, reached carrying capacity. could be ‘overshoot +crash’ b/c disease/resources/war etc.
tragedy of the commons
another common (grazing land), the tragedy (overgrazing) and the reasoning for human behavior that incentivized over exploitation of a commonly held resource. solution is regulating.
