Series Circuits Flashcards
What is a series circuit?
A series circuit is a single loop.
Why are very few things connected in series?
If one component of a series circuit breaks then the whole circuit will stop working.
Describe the PD in series.
The PD of the battery/cell is shared between the components in the circuits.
How can the PD be written as an equation?
Vtotal = V1 + V2 + V3 …
Describe the current in series.
Current is always the same in a series circuit.
How is current measured? What are the units?
Ammeter. Amps (A).
Describe the resistance in a series circuit.
The resistance is the sum of individual resistances of each component.
If a circuit has 2 filament lamps which had a voltage of 4V and 8V, what is the PD across both of them?
12V
If a circuit has 2 filament lamps which both have a resistance of 2 ohms, what would the total resistance be?
4 ohms
What does not get included in calculations with series circuits?
Ammeters have a very low resistance but it does not get included in calculations.
What is the relationship between the resistance and the voltage of a particular component in a series circuit?
Components with a higher resistance will always have a higher share of the voltage (because more push is needed to get the current through the component).
