Date
Use ser when you want to give someone the date.
p.e.: Hoy es el 23 de septiembre.
Occupation
Use ser when you want to talk about your occupation.
p.e.: Nosotras somos abogadas.
Characteristics
Use ser when describing physical characteristics, qualities, or personality traits.
p.e.: LeBron James es famoso.
Time
Use ser when you want to talk about the time.
p.e.: Es la una de la tarde.
Origin
Use ser when you want to talk about where someone or something is from.
p.e.: El auto es alemán.
Relationships
Use ser when you want to talk about your relationship with someone.
p.e.: Ellos son mis tíos.
Position
Use estar when you want to talk about where something is placed.
p.e.: ¿Dónde están mis lentes?
Location
Use estar when you want to talk about where something or someone is.
p.e.: Yo estoy en el restaurante.
Action (what is happening)
Use estar when you want to describe what someone is doing.
Note: For Action, you’ll also need the -ing form of the second verb!
p.e.: Nosotros estamos comiendo pizza.
Condition
Use estar when you want to talk about the state of something or someone.
p.e.: Yo estoy cansada.
Emotions
Use estar when you want to talk about your feelings.
p.e.: Ella está triste hoy.
