Sequences - [Pure 4]. Flashcards
What is a sequence?
A chain of numbers following a rule.
What is a series?
A sequence that gets added up.
What is the expression for an increasing sequence?
un+1 > un.
What is the expression for an decreasing sequence?
un+1 < un.
What is the expression for an periodic sequence?
un+a= un
Whats the difference between Divergent and Convergent Sequences?
- Divergent Sequences don’t tend towards a limit.
- Convergent Sequences do tend towards a limit.
What letter do we replace all the un, un+1, un-1’s with?
L and then solve to find L.
What letter does the sigma notation look like?
An E.
* Sn=nΣr=1(ur).
What does this mean?
3Σn=1(un).
Add up all the un’s from n=1 to n=3 (e.g. u1, u2, u3).
What letter is used for the common difference in an Arithmetic Sequence?
d.
What letter is used for the first term in an Arithmetic Sequence and a Geometric Sequence?
a.
What is the equation for the nth term of an Arithmetic Sequence?
(NOT Given in Formula Booklet!)
un = a + (n-1)d.
What letter is used for the last term in an Arithmetic Sequence?
l.
What are the 2 equations for the ‘Sum to the nth term’ for Arithmetic Sequences?
(Given in Formula Booklet!)
Sn = 1/2(n)[a+l] = 1/2(n)[2a + (n-1)d].
What letter is used for the common difference in a Geometric Sequence?
r.
