Sequence of Emergence Flashcards
What teeth are succedaneous to the primary molars?
Permanent premolars
What is the sequence of eruption for maxillary primary teeth (use palmer’s notation)?
ABDCE
A young dentist extracts 54 from a 5 year old child. The tooth has an unusually long and twisted roots so the dentist decides to drill the tooth in half and remove portions. If you were a senior dentist, using your knowledge of sequence of emergences, what would you advise the young dentist?
Under 54, the 1st premolar (16) is succedaneous and grows between 54’s spayed buccal and lingual roots.
What does the term dentally advanced mean? What is the antagonistic term?
Dentally Advanced - Full set of perm teeth before age 12
Dentally Immature - Mixed dentition after age 12
The chronology and sequence of emergence is equally as important to know when analyzing mixed dentition. True or false?
False – Sequence is more important than chronology. Looking at mixed dentition, depending on what teeth have erupted, you can predict the next eruptions. Timing may be variable depending on the individual.
What is a natal tooth?
Tooth a baby is born with
The entire permanent molars and the roots will be fully formed after 1 year of eruption
False, it takes up to 3 years for the roots to fully develop
What is the last tooth to exfoliate?
Upper canines 53, 63
Last teeth to emerge are usually 2nd molars, not including the potential of 3rd molar eruption
If your child was destined to get punched in the face and sustain damage to his incisors, what age would you not want it to happen on? What age would you prefer it to happen on?
Around age 3.5-3.75, bone absorption of primary incisor roots start, and the roots sit on the labial surface of the developing permanent incisors. Prefer to not sustain damage to incisors due to roots potentially damaging developing teeth.
Best time is around 6 years old when roots are nearly fully absorbed.
What permanent molar cusps emerge first? What happens if a different cusp emerges first?
Mesial cusps
Distal cusps emerge and impaction can occur
What tooth is this? How old is the patient? Why is this tooth prone to decay?
Mandibular 2nd molar
Around 5 years old (less than 5.75 years old)
Enamel isn’t fully developed
Weird orientation, hard to clean
What is the difference between leeway space and primate space?
Leeway - space resulting from mesio-distal size differences of primary molars vs perm premolars
Primate - diastema space between adjacent teeth.
Maxilla- mesial to canine
Mandibular - distal to canine
But can present ^^ in other areas like between lateral incisors
What is mesial drift?
perm molars moving mesially after their emergence
