Sept 18 - ch 4 Flashcards
What does theory provide?
the aim of a theory to come closer to the truths
Be able to describe theory and what it provides.
coherent description of a process that is arrived at by a process of inference with explanation and generated predictions.
seeks who what why how a behaviour does or does not occur
What domains of psychology are relevant to mindfulness theory?
psychology
social psychology
clinical psychology
What are the two Western Traditions of Mindfulness? Be able to describe each
attention, awareness, particular attitude :
-draws upon historical underpinnings
-focus on internal and external environment
active, effortful mode of conscious awareness
- contrast with automatic habitual mode where info is cognitive processing
- no formal connections to historical underpinnings
- focused on the external environment
What did Shapiro and colleagues set out to do with their theory?
created testable model of the process of mindfulness
used mechanisms that may be responsible for change to transform the results
Be able to draw and explain Shapiro’s model of mindfulness
the axiom shift in perspective mechanisms
intentionally ———> Repercieving ————–> self-regulator
attending ————-> Repercieving ———> values clarification
attitude —————–> Repercieving ——–> respond flexibility
———-> exposure
what is the axiom model of shapiros model?
intension - attention - attitude
Describe what is meant by intention, attention and attitude in the model
intension - Your intentions set the stage for what is possible. They remind you from
moment to moment of why you are practicing in the first place
attention - present moment experience by sustained attention (one thing), switching, cognitive inhibition (not getting caught up in thoughts)
attitude - open hearted, friendly, patient, curious
In what three ways can attention be deployed?
Sustained attention - one focus
Switching - breathe, heart beat, sun rays
Cognitive inhibition - not getting caught up in what needs to be done
What is reperceiving? What does it provide?
fundemental shift in perspective - weare able to sit back and simply witness
change our experience through thoughts, perceptions and emotions
step out of ones immediate experience and change the nature of the experience
What are the mechanisms of mindfulness in this model?
step out of ones immediate experience and change the nature of the experience
What is self-regulation?
Self-regulation is the process whereby systems maintain stability of functioning and adaptability to change.
both intention and attention function to enhance these feedback loops and create health:
intention -> attention -> connection -> regulation -> order -> health
How does reperceiving improve mindfulness?
shift in perspective and observe their thoughts, emotions, and body sensations without being defined by them
Not detachment but being apathetic to them
What is value clarification and how can reperceiving help with it?
identifying what is truely meaningful in life
enabling objectivity - separate their values and view with greater objectivity
distinguish conditioned values - conditioned by external influences from those that truly resonate with us
promote mindful choices - observing values with detachment to make more conscious choices
What is cognitive, emotional and behavioural flexibility?
the ability to adapt and respond to the environment in a non-reactive and skillful way
cognitive and behavioural patterns are often conditioned by past experiences and beliefs
