Sepsis and shock Flashcards
Septic shock
Shock caused by severe infection, usually a bacterial infection that damages its own tissues
Distributive shock
A condition that occurs when there is widespread dilation of the small arterioles, small venules, or both.
cardiogenic shock
A state in which not enough oxygen is delivered to the tissues of the body, caused by low output of blood from the heart. It can be a severe complication of a large acute myocardial infarction, as well as other conditions.
hypovolemic shock
shock resulting from blood or fluid loss
obstructive shock
Shock that occurs when there is a block to blood flow in the heart or great vessels, causing an insufficient blood supply to the body’s tissues.
Shock Treatment
- IV volume fluid replaement, blood products if hematocrit <30% or if blood loss has occured, inotrope support, vasoconstrictors (USE CAUTION)
Anaphylaxis
a severe response to an allergen in which the symptoms develop quickly, and without help, the patient can die within a few minutes.
Septic shock treatment
Septic shock treatment
- requires complex hospital management, including administration of antibiotics.
- administering high-flow oxygen during transport.
- Ventilatory support may be necessary to maintain adequate tidal volume.
- Use blankets to conserve body heat.
severe sepsis
decreased blood pressure and dysfunction of at least one organ
a widened pulse pressure most likely indicate which one of the following conditions may have developed in a person?
There is evidence of sepsis - will vasodilate
Type 1 respiratory failure is caused by which one of the following?
A low oxygen concentration in the blood and a normal or low carbon dioxide level
type 2 respiratory failure
A low oxygen level and a raised carbon dioxide level
Neuromuscular failure / depression can cause?
issues ventilating
Which one of the following is common to all forms / causes of shock?
A reduction in the effective circulating volume of blood within the body
Case study - has paracetamol which drops temp, oxygen and diastolic low
Sepsis
Case study - issues after transplant
Graft vs Host disease
Case study - Antibiotic-associated colitis
- Overgrowth of Clostridium difficile invades the intestinal lining & releases toxins that cause diarrhea, fever, & abdominal pain
Intramuscular adrenaline, intravenous hydrocortisone and chlorphenamine are treatments used in which one of the following conditions?
Anaphylaxis - 0.5 milligram is max dose
Tension pneumothorax is associated with which one of the following types of shock?
Obstructive
problem with heart muscle seen in which type of shock?
Cardiogenic
Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors have one of the following effects on a person who develops shock? - major function of ACE inhibitor is to antagonize the effect ACE enzyme - vasodilate
They will have a reduced ability to vasoconstrict and as such will have a normal capillary refill time
