Seperation Techniques Flashcards
What is a solute?
A substance which dissolves in a solvent.
What is a solvent?
A solvent is the liquid that a solvent dissolves in.
What is a solution?
The mixture of a solute dissolved in a solvent.
What is evaporation?
A separation technique that involves changing liquid to gas.
How do we carry out evaporation?
Place a solution in an evaporating basin and heat over a Bunsen Burner.
Give some examples of mixtures that can be separated using evaporation.
Sea water
Salty water
Sugary water
Give four examples of mixtures that can be separated by filtration.
Flour and water
Muddy water
Sandy water
Chalk and water mixture
When small particles of an insoluble substance is put in a liquid, what is formed?
A suspension
What is rock salt?
Salt, sand and other impurities
Where in Northern Ireland is rock salt extracted from the ground?
Carrickfergus
What is rock salt used for?
Gritting the roads
What was salt used for before there were fridges?
As a preservative
How do you separate rock salt?
- Crush the rock salt
- Add water, the salt will dissolve but the earthy impurities are insoluble
- Filter the solid impurities from the mixture
- Evaporate the salt water filtrate.
What is distillation?
The method used to retrieve the water part of the solution
What does distillation make use of?
The different boiling points of solutions.
