Seperation Techniques Flashcards
Distillisation
A separation technique used to seperate liquid (the solvent) from a mixture and keep the liquid part. Distillisation involves boiling the solution and then condensing the vapour back into a liquid by cooling it down.
Filtration
The process in which solid particles in a liquid or gaseous fluid are removed by the use of a filter medium that permits liquid through but retains the solid particles.
Crystallisation
When a solution is heated, some of the solvent evaporated, leaving behind a saturated solution - one in which no more solid can dissolve at that temperature. The saturated solution is allowed to cool and crystals to form. The crystals can be separated out by filtration.
