Seperating Techniques Flashcards
Filtration
Separates a solid from a liquid, substance left on paper is the residue, liquid that comes through is the filtrate
Crystallisation
Separates a solute from a solution (e.g. sodium chloride from sodium chloride solution)
How to obtain pure salt
Use filtration and crystallisation to obtain pure salt from rock salt
Simple distillation
Separates the components of a solution (collects liquid at the end))
Fractional Distillation
Separates a mixture of liquids
Paper Chromatography
Separates a variety of mixtures, (coloured inks)
Practical: Paper Chromatography
Draw line in pencil 1cm above paper. Put a spot of ink and allow to dry. Suspend in solvent (not above pencil line) and allow to dissolve. Leave paper to dry.
Retardation Factor
distance moved by a spot / distance moved by the solvent front
