Separation techniques and the periodic table Flashcards
where can you find the metals on the periodic table
on the left side
What is a mixture?
a mixture is made from different substances that are not chemically combined eg: sand and water
What is a solution?
a solution is a mix of two or more substances which have dissolved or mixed to make a solution
What is a pure substance?
this is a substance made out of one type of atom
How can you tell if something is a pure substance?
they tend to have a lower melting point than mixtures
Name 4 ways you can separate a mixture
chromatography, filtration, distillation and evaporation
What is evaporation?
evaporation is when a liquid is boiled/heated and the liquid has turned into a gas, it is used to separate a soluble solid from a liquid.
What is distillation?
purifying a liquid by evaporating the liquid from the solid by heating and cooling to make it back into a liquid
How are evaporation and distillation different?
evaporation is turning the liquid into a gas where as distillation is turning it into a gas and back into a liquid again
Describe how to carry out filtration
use filtered paper in a funnel or any other filter and put your mixture in and it will let the liquid pass through and will leave the solids behind
Why can’t you separate a solvent from a solute using filtration?
the solute will have dissolved in the solvent making the solid dissolve in the liquid make it a liquid too
What is chromatography used for?
this is used to see what coloured felt tips have used other colours to make that colour
Describe how to carry out chromatography
get some sort of ink eg: felt tip or food colouring and put them on some paper. tie the paper to a pencil and put the pencil on a glass of water and let the paper just touch the paper and wait for the rusults
What are the columns of the periodic table called?
groups
What are the rows of the periodic table called?
periods
