Separation Techniques Flashcards
Extraction
separates aqueous mixtures, organic phase less polar
Simple Distillation
separates molecules by vapor pressure, more volatile distill first
Fractional Distillation
separation of liquids whose bps are closer together
Vacuum Distillation
lowers pressure in system allowing distillation to occur at lower temperatures
TLC
stationary phase- polar
mobile phase- non-polar (usually hexane)
*np travels further and faster
Column Chromatography
stationary phase- absorbant
mobile phase- solvent poured through column
Size Exclusion Chromatography
stationary phase- pore studded gel beads (smaller molecules get trapped and elute slower)
Ion-Exchange Chromatography
separates based on electrostatic interactions
Cation Exchange
captures + ions, elute slower
- charged stationary phase
Anion Exchange
captures - ions, elute slower
+ charged stationary phase
Affinity Chromatography
ligands designed to bind a specific compound of interest are attached to the stationary phase beads
Gas Chromatography
lower bp elute faster and have earlier peaks
