Isomers Flashcards
Isomer
molecules that share the same chemical formula but differ in their structure
Structural Isomers (constitutional)
different ways atoms can be connected
Functional Isomers
structural isomers with different functional groups
Tautomers
structural isomers that interconvert with each other and exist in equilibrium
Stereoisomers
same functional groups, different spatial configuration
non-superimposable mirror images
Conformational Isomers
anti vs eclipsed (think gauche)
Anti Conformation
180 degree separation
Gauche Conformation
60 degree separation
Angle Strain
occurs when the angle between single bonded c-atoms deviates from 109.5
Torsional Strain
created by eclipsing substituents on neighboring atoms
Steric Strain
caused by substituents getting in each others way
Cis/Trans Isomers
geometric isomer
refers to the positioning of 2 identical substituents across a double bond
