separating techniques Flashcards
simple distillation is what
.Simple distillation works because the dissolved solute has a much higher boiling point than the solvent. When the solution is heated, solvent vapour evaporates from the solution. The gas moves away and is cooled and condensed. The remaining solution becomes more concentrated in solute as the amount of solvent in it decreases.
fractional distillation is what
the same thing happens as for simple distillation, BUT the higher boiling point liquid condenses in the fractionating column and drips back into FLASK
filtration is what
the insoluble solid and liquid mixture is poured into filter paper the liquid passed through to form the filtrate the solid remains on the filter paper as residue
crystallisation is what
the soluble solid and solvent mixture is boiled, the mixture cools and the remaining solvent evaporates leaving crystals of soluble solid
chromatography is what
sample spots are placed on a pencil line above the solvent line, over time the sample spots creep up the chromatography paper.
