Q

Explain Sieving

A

when mixture is passed through a sieve which allows smaller particles to pass through. it traps larger insoluble particles.

Q

Explain settling & decanting

A

this relies on gravity to separate insoluble particles from a mixture. Heavier particles sink to the bottom leaving the lighter substance at the top. The light substance can then be carefully poured off from the top without disturbing sediment at the bottom.

Q

Explain filtering

A

This is like sieving because the mixture is passed through a number of layers of material with different sized particles like sand & gravel. Trapping the large insoluble particles.

Q

Explain stilling (evaporation)

A

this uses energy to heat the mixture. only works if one of the substances in the mixture evaporates. in the case of sugar and water, the water evaporates and leaves the sugar behind.
