Separating Mixtures Flashcards
What is a compound?
Compound When two or more elements combine chemically.
Example: Water (H2O) is a compound made up of hydrogen and oxygen.
What is a mixture?
Mixture Contains two or more substances mixed together physically but not chemically bonded.
Example: A salad is a mixture of lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers.
What are the rules of mixtures?
- Mixtures are two or more substances mingled together but not chemically bonded.
- Mixtures can be separated by physical methods.
- No chemical changes occur when two substances are mixed together.
- Mixtures only have the properties of the substances they contain.
What is decanting?
Decanting When the top liquid layer can be poured off without disturbing the sediment layer.
Example: Decanting is used to separate oil from water in a mixture.
What is sedimentation?
Sedimentation The process of letting dense insoluble particles of a suspension mixture settle to the bottom.
What does immiscible mean?
Immiscible When two or more substances are incapable of being mixed or blended together.
What does miscible mean?
Miscible Liquids that can be mixed or blended together.
What is sieving?
Sieving A method for separating materials by their size.
What is filtration?
Filtration A method for separating an insoluble solid from a liquid.
What is a filtrate?
Filtrate The substance that passes through the filter.
What is a residue?
Residue The substance that remains on the filter or filter paper.
What is boiling?
The change of a liquid into a gas throughout the liquid.
What is evaporation?
The change of a liquid into a gas at the surface of the liquid.
What is distillation?
Separates liquids and sediments by their boiling points.
What is distillate?
The collected liquid that condenses out of its gas state.
