Materials and Sustainablility Flashcards
What are the properties of metals?
Lustrous/shiny
Ductile/stretchy
Malleable/mouldable
Strong
Conduct heat
Conduct electricity
Sonorous
What is an alloy?
An alloy is a mixture of metals.
What is conduction?
The transfer of heat energy by contact is conduction.
Particles in solids are close together and vibrate.
What is convection?
The transfer of heat in a liquid or gas from a warmer spot to a cooler spot.
What is thermal radiation?
The transfer of heat by electromagnetic waves. No particles are needed to transport the heat.
What is mining?
The process of extracting metal ore from the earth.
What is smelting?
The process of heating ore at high temperatures to separate out its mixture of metals.
What is refining?
The process of removing impurities from a substance.
What is polymerisation?
A chemical process that combines several monomers to form a polymer (plastic).
What are the three parts to sustainability?
- Social sustainability is concerned with people and human well-being.
- Economic sustainability considers financial issues.
- Environmental sustainability considers the planet.
What are some ways to be more sustainable?
Reduce, reuse, recycle & refuse.
Look for alternative energy sources.
Think about our choices when we purchase products.
