Separating mixtures Flashcards
Mixtures can be made up of what
elements or compounds
Components that make up the mixture aren’t what?
aren’t chemically bonded together, meaning it can be separated easily
What should you use to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid
filtration
How do you do filtration
Put some filter paper into a funnel and pour the mixture into it, the liquid part of the mixture runs through the paper, leaving behind a solid residue
What do you collect in filtration
the insoluble liquid
When doing evaporation what are you collecting
the dissolved soluble
what method to use when separating a mixture of liquids
fractional distillation
Physical properties of simple distillation
-boiling points
-used when the boiling points are different
Physical properties of fractional distillation
-boiling points are similar
what method should you use to separate out solutions
simple distillation
What method to use when seperating mixtures
Chromatography
What method to use when separating mixtures
Chromatography
How to do chromatography
-draw a line near the bottom of the filter paper
-add spot of different inks to the line
-roll the sheet up and put it in a beaker of a solvent
-make sure the level of solvent is below the baseline
-place a lid on top of the container to stop it from evaporating
-each different dye will move up the paper at different rates
-once the solvent has nearly reached the top of the paper take out the solvent
How to work out the Rf value
Rf= distance moved by component (DIVIDED BY)
distance moved by solvent
The rf of
2cm divided by 10cm
0.2
