Lilac
What colour do calcium ions turn in flame tests?
Brick red (Orange/Red)
What colour do copper ions turn in flame tests?
Blue/Green
What is the precipitate colour of aluminium ions in NaOH precipitate tests?
White, excess NaOH goes colourless
What is the precipitate colour of calcium ions in NaOH precipitate tests?
White, excess NaOH stays same
What is the precipitate colour of copper ions in NaOH precipitate tests?
Blue
What is the precipitate colour of Iron(II) ions in NaOH precipitate tests?
Green
What is the precipitate colour of
Iron(III) ions in NaOH precipitate tests?
Brown
How do you test for carbonate ions?
- Detected by using a dilute acid
- Bubbles are given off
- Test with limewater, if cloudy it’s CO2
How do you test for sulfate ions?
- Add couple drops hydrochloric acid
- Add couple drops Barium chloride
- A white precipitate will form
How do you test for halide ions?
- Add few drops dilute nitric acid
- Add few drops dilute silver nitrate solution
- Record colour of precipitate
Chloride - White
Bromide - Cream
Iodide - Yellow
How do you test for ammonia?
- React with hydroxide solution
- Warm the mixture
- Ammonia gas is given off
- Turns damp red litmus paper blue
How do you test for chlorine?
Damp blue litmus turns white
