Sentences, Clauses, and Phrases Flashcards
A complete sentence must…
- have a subject
- have a predicate/verb/verb phrase
- make sense on their own
a sentence subject is
a noun or pronoun that tells who or what the sentence is about. You can find the subject by asking, Who or what is being discussed or doing the action?
Note: At times, it can be difficult to identify the subject of the sentence. This is especially true when prepositional phrases are after the subject.
In other situations, a noun or pronoun is used as an adjective for the subject.
a predicate/verb/verb phrase
have a predicate/verb/verb phrase (these words are interchangeable) (this tells what the subject does or is or what happened to it. You can find the verb/verb phrase by asking What did the subject do?).
A sentence must make sense….
make sense on their own (the group of words have to be complete and make sense. It’s possible for a sentence to have a subject and a predicate and not make sense.).
