Contains 2 or more main clauses therefore it contains 2 or more simple sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions or a semi-colon, they cannot be joined by a comma

Complex
contains 1 main clause and 1 or more subordinate clauses
While I was chopping wood you were snoring in bed
when the clock struck he entered the room
Compound complex
It has 2 main clauses and at least 1 subordinate clause
After the monkeys had been fed, and before the keeper could open the cage where the apes were kept, the gorilla reached out of his cage and grabbed the bucket in a big, hairy paw.
