What is a simple sentence?
contains only one finite verb; made up of one main clause
What is a complex sentence?
consists of a main clause and one or more subordinate clauses.
What is a compound sentence?
a BALANCED SENTENCE because both main clauses have equal weight and importance.
What is a compound-complex sentence?
a sentence that contains more than one main clause and one or more subordinate clauses.
What does an imperative sentence do?
issue commands or requests or they can express a desire or wish
What does an exclamatory sentence do?
express strong emotion.
What does an interrogative sentence do?
they always ask a question and end in a question mark.
What does a declarative sentence do?
make a statement to relay information or ideas
What is a phrase?
a group of two or more words that work together but don’t form a clause and are not a complete sentence and does not contain a finite verb.
What is a adverbial phrase?
group of words functioning as an adverb
What is a adjectival phrase?
a group of words functioning as an adjective
What is a prepositional phrase?
a group of words functioning as a preposition
What is a noun phrase?
a group of words functioning as a noun
What is a subject ?
usually a noun, pronoun or noun phrase.
What is a verb ?
If the verb is followed by a direct object, the verb is transitive. If not, the verb is intransitive.
