repetition
where words or phases are repeated in a sentence or paragraph, this adds emphasis on the repeated phrase or drives home a point effectively
examples of signal words
such as, however, and, but and consequently
minor sentences
grammatically imperfect sentences, sentences without a verb, can impact by adding drama or emphasis
commands
where the writer is instructing the reader to do something, highlights the need for action
rhetorical question
a device used by writers to introduce their opinion on an argument or point, to prompt the reader to think about the argument and persuade them to come to the same conclusion
colons and dashes
to introduce a list, a quote, an explanation or an example
inverted commas
- shows artistic titles
- quotation
- to indicate ironic comments
- can indicate the author is making it clear it isn’t their own words
semi colon
separates items in a list
listing
builds up tension, demonstrate a chronological order
exclamation mark
used to finish a sentence which is an exclamation, when a character is shouting or to create dramatic effect
signal words
allow you to follow the directions of the writers argument
short sentences
sets a fast pace, moving quickly through ideas or action, creates a list, provides climax or anticlimax to previos tension building long sentences
inversion
where words are placed in an unusual order in the sentence to place emphasis on one part of the sentence
climatic sentences
create/ build up tension, builds up ideas in order of importance leaving most important to last
balanced sentences
the structure of the first part of the sentence is repeated in the second part, can be separated by commas, semi colons or conjunctions
