Sensory System Flashcards
The three layers of the wall of the eye
- Outer (fibrous) coat = cornea and sclera
- Vascular (uveal) coat = iris, ciliary body, choroid
- Inner - retinal coat = retinal pigmented epithelium, neural retina
3 chambers of the eye
Anterior, Posterior, Vitreous cavity
Anterior chamber location
between cornea and iris
Posterior chamber location
between back of iris and lens with attached fibers
Vitreous cavity location
between lens and retina
Cornea appearance and shape
Transparent and convex shape aids in focusing light onto retina
Blood supply of central cornea
Avascular; no blood or lymph in central portion. Central part gets nutrients via diffusion from aqueous humor.
Blood supply of peripheral cornea
Supplied by blood from limbus vessels.
Number of layers in cornea
5
Transplantation of cornea
Successful, and lacks rejection
5 layers of the cornea
Epithelium, Bowman’s layer, Stroma, Decemet’s membrane, Corneal endothelium C-BEDS
Epithelium layer description
- Anterior layer
- non keratinized stratified squamous epithelium w/small microvilli
- Pain receptors via trigeminal/oculomotor
- can regenerate
Bowman’s layer description
- layer of type 1 collagen
- can not regenerate
- part of the Stroma layer
Stroma layer description
- lattice of type 1 and type 5 collagen fibers
- rich ECM of chondroitin and keratan sulfate
Decemet’s membrane description
- thick(5-10um) basement membrane
- contains type 7 collagen
- produced by corneal epithelium
Corneal endothelium description
- surface faces anterior eye chamber
- impermeable intercellular spaces prevent leakage of fluid into corneal stroma
Sclera connective tissue
dense irregular connective tissue, opaque
Purpose of the sclera
provides protection and structure support and insertion point for extraocular muscles
