Sensory System Flashcards
What is chronic illness
If had for longer than 6 months it is a lifelong illness cant cure just manage
What is the goals of rehabilitation
Restore function
To improve abilities
Learn new skills
Prevent further illness/disability
What are the 5 senses
Sight
Hearing
Smell
Touch
Taste
What are the 3 components of the ear and brief description
External - outer ear, external auditory canal and ear drum thats a thin membrane separates outer and middle ear - contains hair and oil glands
Middler ear - air filled cavity. Smallest bones are here
Inner ear - complicated series of canals. contains receptors for hearing
What bones does the middler ear contain
Malleus, incus and stapes
What are the two main functions of the ear
Hearing
Balance
What are the three layers of the eye and describe
Sclera - outer layer made of connective tissue the white part of the eye
Choriod - second layer made up of blood vessels, iris, pupil
Retina - inner layer contains receptors for vision
How does light enter the eye
It enters through the cornea passes the lens behind the pupil then reflects on retina and carried to the brain by optic nerve interpretation
What are the structures of the eye
Eyelid
Eyelashes
Eyebrows
Tearing
Eye muscles
What are the five primary tastes
Sour, bitter, sweet, salty and savory
What are the changes with smell that occur with aging
Decreased ability to smell
Loss of ability to discriminate between smells
Risks to personal safety
What are the changes that occur to taste when aging?
Number of taste buds decrease
Decreased saliva production
Decreased appetite
Sensitivity to taste buds decrease
What is changes with hearing with aging
Decreased ability to hear high pitch sounds
Decreased elasticity of the ear drum
Harder and drier ear wax more likelihood of wax plug
Describe the aids that help with hearing loss
Hearing aids
Cochlear implant
Bone anchored hearing aid
Implantable middle ear hearing devices
Signalling devices
Describe presbyopia
Gradual inability to focus on close objects
