Sensory Supply of the Face Flashcards
Mostly through three branches of the trigeminal nerve (some skin over the angle of the mandible and ear is supplied by the Great Auricular Nerve from the cervical plexus)
Ophthalmic division (V1)
Sensory or motor or both?
Names of divisions
Where does it enter?
Pure Sensory
Three branches:
- Frontal
- Lacrimal
- Nasociliary
Enters through:
-Superior Orbital Fissure
Ophthalmic division (V1): -Frontal Nerve
What nerve does it give rise to? AND
–>What does it Supply?
Gives rise to:
-Superior Orbital Nerve
Supplies:
- upper eyelid
- forehead
- scalp
Ophthalmic division (V1): -Lacrimal Nerve
Where does it pass to?
Supplies?
Passes:
-to Lacrimal Gland
Gives branches to:
- lateral skin
- conjunctiva of upper eyelid
Ophthalmic division (V1): -Nasociliary Nerve
What does it Supply?
Name of branch?
Sensory Nerve to the eye
Supplies:
-orbit by several branches
Gives rise to:
-External Nasal Nerve–> which supplies: skin of dorsum of the nose
Maxillary Division (V2)
Sensory or motor or both?
Course?
Purely sensory
Course:
- leaves middle cranial fossa via foramen rotundum and enters pterygopalatine fossa
- -> gives off a number of branches such as the Zygomatic Nerve
-Main nerve enters the orbit through the inferior orbital fissure as the Infraorbital Nerve
Maxillary Division (V2): -Zygomatic Nerve
Course?
Branch formed at pterygopalatine fossa
Course:
- enters the orbit the the inferior Orbital fissure
- -> runs on the lateral wall of the orbit
- -> divides into two branches which emerge on to the face through foramina in zygomatic bone
Supplies:
-Skin over the zygomatic bone
Maxillary Division (V2): -Infraorbital Nerve
Course?
Course:
- runs on the floor of the orbit
- -> emerges onto the face through the infraorbital foramen
Supplies:
- lower eyelid
- cheek
- upper lip
Mandibular Division (V3)
Sensory, motor or both?
Course?
Name of branches?
A mixed nerve (sensory and motor)
-contains all the motor fibres of the trigeminal nerve
Course:
-through the foramen ovale
Branches:
- Mental Nerve
- Buccal Nerve
- Auriculotemporal Nerve
Mandibular Division (V3): -Mental Nerve
A terminal branch of?
Emerges from?
Supplies?
A terminal branch of:
-Inferior Alveolar Nerve
Emerges:
-from the canal at the Mental Foramen
Supplies:
-skin of chin and lower lip
Mandibular Division (V3): -Buccal Nerve
Course?
Supplies?
Course:
-Runs anteriorly to reach the cheek
Supplies:
-Skin and mucous membranes of cheek
Mandibular Division (V3): -Auriculotemporal Nerve
Course?
Supplies?
Course:
-Runs superiorly together with superficial temporal vessels
Supply
-sensory supply to the skin in the temporal region
Cervical Plexus
Where is it found?
Branches?
Found in the posterior triangle
- formed by the union of the first four cervical spinal nerves joined together by simple loops.
- Lies deep to the sternomastoid muscle
Branches:
Branches of the plexus can be divided into superficial and deep groups:
-Superficial Group: supplies muscles
-Deep Group: distributed to the skin of the anterior and lateral sides of the neck and lateral aspect of the head.
Cutaneous Branches: from the plexus emerge around the middle of the posterior border of the sternomastoid muscle.
Cervical Plexus:
-Great Auricular Nerve
Involves which cervical spinal nerve
Course?
Supplies?
C2 + C3
Course:
-one of the four cutaneous branches of the plexus ascends across the sternomastoid muscle
Supplies:
- skin of the auricle
- angle of the mandible
