Orbicularis Oculi
Origin:
- medial palpebral ligament
- medial orbital margin
Insertion:
- lateral palpebral raphe
- skin around the margin of orbit
Action: closes eyelids
(orbital portion: closes eyelids forcefully
palpebral portion: closes eyelids slowly)
Orbicularis Oris
Origin:
- from bone near the median plane of maxilla and mandible
- from the deep surface of the skin
Insertion: mucous membranes of lips
Action: compresses and protrudes lips
Buccinator
It is a muscle of the cheek (L. trumpeter)
Origin:
- posteriorly from pterygomandibular raphe
- superiorly and inferiorly from alveolar processes of mandible and maxilla.
Insertion:
-angle of mouth
Action: presses cheek against molar teeth
- aids chewing
- compresses distended cheeks- air expulsion from oral cavity.
Frontalis
Origin:
-epicranial aponeurosis
Insertion:
-skin of eyebrows
Action:
- elevates eyebrows
- wrinkles forehead
Platysma
Superficial muscle of the neck and chin
Origin:
-superficial fascia of deltoid and pectoral regions
Insertion:
- body of mandible
- skin of cheek
- orbicularis oris
Action:
- Depresses the mandible
- tenses skin of lower face and neck
Facial nerve (beyond stylomastoid foramen) -and name of branches?
After emerging from the stylomastoid foramen, it immediately enters parotid gland
-it runs superficially in gland and gives rise to five terminal branches:
- Temporal
- Zygomatic
- Buccal
- Mandibular
- Cervical
These emerge from superior, anterior and inferior margins of parotid gland
Supplies muscles of facial expression.
