Where should the Mini Mental Exam be administered?
Testing in quiet space, minimize external distractions
Individual Sensory Stimulation
o Patient more likely to demonstrate alertness if upright in supported wheelchair
(recliner/tilt in space) vs. in bed

Transition goal of mini mental exam to intervention
o Tracking
o Sustained attention
o Determination of optimal modes
Subjective - Communication deficits
o Determination of yes/no reliability
o Alter questions into yes/no, choice questions
Functional Assessment - Communication Deficits
Non-verbal or Demonstration Techniques
Functional Assessment - Cognitive Deficits

o Attentional Considerations
Patient Neglect/ Inattention
- Initial patient presentation to examination
- Patient performance of functional task/awareness of limb following active movement/resting
positions - Consider patients ability to make eye contact with therapist on both sides
Verbal Cues
o Tracking past midline
o Physical assistance - Line Bisection Test
