Sensory Processing Flashcards
Difference threshold
The minimum difference between two stimuli to be perceived as different half the time
Webers law
To be perceived as different two stimuli must differ by a constant proportion
Sensation
Process by which our sensory receptors in the nervous system receive and represent stimuli from the environment
Perception
Process of organizing and interpreting sensory information
Psychophysics
Study of relationships between the physical characteristics of stimuli and our psychological experience of them
Absolute threshold
Minimum stimulation necessary to detect a stimulus fifty percent of the time
Signal detection theory
Proposes that there is no absolute threshold, detection depends upon experience, expectations, alertness, and motivation
Subliminal
Below absolute threshold for conscious awareness
Priming
Activation of certain associations, predisposing memory, perception or response
Sensory adaptation
Diminished sensitivity as a result of constant stimulation
