Sensory functions Flashcards
Types of Sensory functions
visual hearing vestibular taste smell proprioceptive touch pain temperature/pressure mulit=sensory porcessing
Types of visual
quality
acuity
stability
field
define quality
Quality
- ability to detect light, contrast and colour among visual stimuli
Define acuity
Acuity
- to detect objects, differentiate between them and discern details
define stability
- our ability to perceive objects or our environment as stable even though our eyes are moving rapidly
Define field
- detected of everything within the visual field
- include objects close to our bdy and those far away
Types of hearing
Detection and discrimination
awareness of location
distance of sound
Define detection and discrimination
- ability to detect noise
- discriminate between pitch and volume of sound to determine what is making the noise
Define Awareness of location
- being aware of the location of sounds
Define Distance of sound
- being aware of the distance of sounds
types of vestibular
position
balance
secure movement against gravity
define position
- the sensory function of the inner ear that helps to determine the position of the body
- position of the head provides information of the body
define balance
- body’s ability to maintain an upright position
define secure movement against gravity
- allows the person to move against gravity helps the body with position and maintain balance
Types of taste
just one
quality of bitterness, sweetness, sour and saltiness
Type of smell
Sensing odours and discrimination
Types of Proprioceptive
Position in space, Kineastehsia
Right and left discrimination
Define position in space
- aware of body in the internal and external space
Define Kinaesthesia
- receipt of information from receptors in muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments enables detection of the excursion and direction of joint movement
- = PERCEPTION OF MOVEMENT
Define Right and Left Discrimination
- Differentially between one side to the other
- Need to know where its right or left
Types of Touch
being Touch
discriminate textures
Define being touched
- The ability to perceive contact with the skin
Define discriminate texture
- Various textures and being able to tolerate the textures
Types of pain
localised and generalised
types of temperature and pressure
Thermal awareness
forced applied to skin
Define thermal awareness
Thermal awareness
- Ability to sense heat and cold
Define Force applied to skin
force applied to skin
- Force or pressure against the skin,
- Is pressure being applied to the person or is the person applying pressure to an object
Types of Multi-sensory processing
visual-motor integration spatial relations spatial operations visual closure figure ground depth perception stereognosis
Define visual-motor integration
- Coordinating the interaction of information from the eyes with body movement during activity
Define spatial relations
- Determine the position of objects relative to each other
Define spatial operations
- Mentally manipulating the position of objects in various relationships
Define visual closure
- The process or ability to fill in missing parts of a visual stimulus
Define figure ground
- Differentiating between background and foreground shapes and objects.
- A client with a figure-ground deficit will have difficulty visually distinguishing a figure
Define depth perception
- Depth perception: “Determining the relative distance between objects, figures or landmarks and the observer, and changes in planes or surfaces”
Define stereognosis
- Without the use of vision, the ability to identify sizes, shape and weight of familiar objects using tactile, proprioceptive information and cognition
