Sensory And Mental Status Assessment Flashcards
4 types of reflexes and examples
1) Deep tendon
- patellar knee jerk
2) Superficial
- corneal reflex
3) Visceral
- pupillary response to light
4) Pathologic
- babinski
Deep Tendon Reflex
Patellar Knee jerk
- patient must be relaxed
- rate on scale of 0-4
- compare bilaterally
Pathologic Reflex
Babinski
- stroke J on bottom of foot leading to big toe
- negative test: scrunch

Taste
Stereognosis
Have patient close eyes, put a familiar item in their hand and have them identify
If altered: parietal lobe lesion or sensory nerve tract dysfunction

If altered: parietal lobe lesion
Dermatones
Area of skin innervated by specific dorsal root nerves
Loc of injury on spine determines area of altered function
