Sensors Flashcards
Unit 2
Transducer
device that converts energy from one form to another
Sensor
converts a physical parameter to an electrical output
measure variations such as: resistance, inductance, capacitance, piezo electric effect, electromagnetic radiation
Actuator
converts an electrical signal to a physical output
How could we measure displacement?
size, shape, position
change in diameter of vessels
changes in volume or shape of cardiac chambers
movement of liquids in valves
What are two types of RESISTIVE displacement sensors?
Potentiometers & Strain Gauges
Potentiometers
a type of resistive displacement sensor
produce a linear output as a function of displacement
ex: minitorque potentiometers for eye blink measurements after brain damage
Strain Gauges
uses a thin wire to stretch and measure corresponding resistive changes based on the length, diameter, and resistivity
What are the two types of bonds for strain gauges?
bonded: wire is embedded in cloth or plastic, and mounted onto a flexible plate
